Meta Stopped Rewarding Your Targeting

Detailed targeting is a suggestion in 2026. Here's what actually controls who sees your ads, and what to do about it.

For years, the game in Meta ads was audience building. You stacked interests, layered behaviors, built lookalikes off your best customers, and the media buyer who could build the smartest audience usually had the edge. That is not really how the platform works anymore. If your account is still built like it is 2019, there is a good chance you are fighting Meta instead of giving it what it needs.

What changed

Meta now relies much more heavily on the creative itself to help determine who should see an ad. Detailed targeting still exists, but it is not the hard boundary it used to be. Advantage+ is now baked into the platform across major campaign types, and Meta has gotten a lot more comfortable expanding beyond the audiences you give it.

The practical takeaway is simple: your creative is doing a lot more of the targeting now. A video showing a tired parent getting ready at 6am can help Meta understand who that ad is probably for without you needing to build some hyper-specific audience around parents, coffee drinkers, early risers, and whatever else you would have stacked together five years ago. That does not mean targeting is dead. It just means it matters less than it used to, and your creative matters more.

What that means for brands

Your creative library is part of your audience strategy. If you are running five ads with basically the same concept, same person, same message, and slightly different headlines, you do not really have five different ways into the market. You have one idea repeated five times. Real variety means different concepts, different hooks, different problems, different people, different formats, and different reasons to care. Not five versions of the same ad with a new color grade.

Volume matters more too. Meta needs options. If you are only refreshing a handful of concepts every few months, there is only so much the system can learn from. That does not mean you need to produce more expensive hero films. It usually means you need to produce smarter. Shoot modularly, capture multiple hooks, build different openings, and get more mileage out of the same production so the platform has genuinely different creative to work with.

And none of this matters if your data is bad. If your conversion event is firing incorrectly, your pixel is missing from key pages, or your server-side tracking is not set up properly, Meta is learning from bad information. At that point, it can optimize all day long and still optimize toward the wrong thing. It is not the exciting part of marketing, but fixing your data can have a bigger impact than another round of audience tweaks.

One thing to do before touching your targeting

Pull up every ad you are currently running and put them next to each other. Then ask one question: how many of these are actually different ideas? Not different edits. Not different headlines. Different ideas.

If the answer is two, that might be your real bottleneck. Before rebuilding audiences, rebuild the amount of creative variety you are giving the platform.

At ThinkRaven, we make the creative and run the media, which also means we get to find out pretty quickly when the targeting was never the problem in the first place.
